Deep healing with A Dark Mother. Tantrik Goddess Maa Chamunda is one of the seventh Matrikas who enjoys independent worship of her own, where all other Matrikas are always worshiped together with Shiva. Chamunda was originally a tribal goddess worshipped by the tribals of the Vindhya mountains in Central India. The goddess is often portrayed as residing in cremation grounds or near holy fig trees and worshipped by ritual animal sacrifices along with offerings of wine. This method of worship was retained in Tantric worship of Chamunda after its assimilation into mainstream Hinduism. Mother Chamunda is emblematic of childhood pestilence, fever, starvation and disease and propitiated in order to avoid those ills that carried off so many children before they reach adulthood.
I have copied this idol from Kankaleshwari Kali Temple at Kanchan Nagar, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal, India. It is said that the deity was excavated from the bed of river Damodar after severe flood in 1923 (though some accounts say the temple was built around the year AD1700).
