In Iran during the 1000s and 1100s, Vessels in the shape of animal gained popularity, especially as incense burners. Felines were favoured in Persian art and this piece may represent a caracal, a type of lynx. The diffusion of perfumed smoke through the burner’s pierced palmetto design may have served as a sensorial reminder of this teaching. It may signify purification, symbolize prayer ( as among the Hebrews), or be an offering that rises to the celestial or sacred realm. It is said that the fragrant smoke acts as spiritual broom, eliminating impurities and creating an environment that is scared and conductive to spiritual connections and experiences.
Bronze incense burners were cast very early, as exemplified by those from the Zhou period (1046 – 256 bce). Their forms were often inspired by cosmological themes.
Inspired by this diffusion of perfumed smoke technique, I have prepared this Panther form incense burner by coping a 12th century one where the head of the creature was cast separately and is removed to fill its body with hot coal and incense. I will request every one to introduce this concept of using perfumed smoke with this Panther diffuser as a household purpose.
