Goddess who killed the buffalo-demon is worshipped throughout India. Shiva, Vishnu and other Gods presented Devi Durga with their respective powers to overcome Mahishasura and after killing him she became Mahisasuramardini. She is the auspicious daughter of the mountain, who delights all of creation and rejoices with the Universe. Who is praised by Nandi and resides on the peak of Vindhyas.

Who dwells on Vishnu, praise by Indra having a universal family. In Devi Mahatyam, it was explained that who ever chants or listen to the Mahishsura Mardini strotram, Goddess Durga will stay with them and protects their health and wealth. Reciting or listening to this strotram removes all negative emotions like fear, anger, ego and offers Victory.

The first hymn of the mantra (strotram) describes the attributes of Durga :
aigiri nandini nanditamedini viswavinodini nandinute
girivaravindhyasirodhinivasini visnuvilasinijisnunute
bhagavata he sitikanthakutumbini bhurikutumbini bhurikrte
jaya jaya he mahisasuramardini ramyakapardini sailasute
