Bandevi or Bonbibi , is a legendry lady of the forest, dubbed as a guardian spirit of the forest and venerated by both the Hindu residents as Bandevi and Muslim residents as Bonbibi, of the Sundarbans ( the largest mangrove forest in the world spread across Sothern Bangladesh and West Bengal in eastern India, north of Bay of Bengal and home to the Bengal Tigers). She is called upon mostly by the honey-collectors and woodcutters before entering the forest for protection against attacks from the tigers. It is believed that the demon king Dakkhin Rai (Lord of the Sundarbans), an arch-enemy of Bonbibi actually appears in the disguise of a tiger and attacks human beings.
Bonbibi is worshipped by her Hindu followers as Bondurga or Bandevi and her vahana(mount) is a tiger. I have made this motif paying my heartiest condolence for those who are offering their lives before Dakkhin Rai every year and by their sacrifices we are getting the ‘Sundarban Honey (now a GI tagged product of West Bengal)” and the most exclusive ‘Bee Wax’, which is most essential in our “Bengal Dokra (an another GI of West Bengal)” making process by following the ‘Lost-wax’ metal technique.
